alpha and multialpha ray sources

Alpha and multialpha ray sources are used for energy and efficiency calibration of all alpha detectors and measuring assemblies.

They are characterized in terms of :

        • activity (Bq) (shown by a fading blue band in the table),
  • alpha particle flux within a solid angle of 2 pi sr (s-1).

The radionuclides are electroplated,

  • either on a stainless steel disk 22 mm in diameter and 0.5 mm thick (type A),
  • or on a polished stainless steel disk 25 or 30 mm in diameter and 0.5 mm thick (types B, C and D).

The sources are available in type A, B, C or D holders and can be set in Duralinox rings. LEA also produces calibrated multialpha ray sources (comprising a mixture of three radionuclides : 241Am, 244Cm and 239Pu) characterized in terms of alpha particle flux (s-1) within a solid angle of 2 pi sr.

The alpha particle flux of each radionuclide represents around onethird of the total flux.
