Monitoring the environment and protecting it against radioactive pollution necessitates continuous measurement of releases, and periodic monitoring of radioactivity levels in the soil, groundwater and atmosphere.

The low levels of activity concerned make instrument calibration a difficult task. Standards for environmental monitoring were designed to meet this need by offering the following features:

• low activity concentrations in large volumes, approximating experimental conditions for monitoring of releases,
• packaging enabling the standard to be used without opening the container for direct calibration of NaI(TI), BGO, Ge(Li), Ge-HP, Si(Li) and other detectors.
